Isn’t that what we want—a siren call to someplace rapturous? That is what prompted Le Sirenuse, the family-run Positano hotel founded in 1951, to distill its seaside glamour into Eau d’Italie. Launched in 2004 by Marina Sersale (now a second-generation co-owner) and her husband Sebastián Alvarez Murena, the original eau de parfum (Eau d'Italie Signature Eau de Parfum) features notes of sun-warmed terracotta, tuberose, and terraced lemon groves (plus a soupçon of circa-1960s Elizabeth Taylor mystique). A suite of fragrances has followed, including the 20th anniversary nod, Acqua di Positano: a love letter with citron, driftwood, and salt grains.

Eau d'Italie, a fragrance brand born out of the essence of Italy’s captivating beauty and culture, draws its inspiration from the enchanting Le Sirenuse Hotel in Positano. Founded in 2001 to celebrate the hotel’s 50th anniversary, Eau d’Italie emerged as a response to the unexpected cancellation of a grand event due to the 9/11 tragedy. From a contemplative moment on the terrace of the hotel in the winter of 2002, the idea for this fragrance brand was born, an idea that would capture the soul of Italy in each carefully crafted bottle. Over two decades later, Eau d’Italie has cemented itself as a contemporary classic, loved for its ability to encapsulate the essence of Italian beauty and sensuality.

At the heart of Eau d’Italie lies the desire to translate the intangible, the memories, the landscapes, and the emotions of Italy into scent. Their signature perfume, Eau d’Italie Eau de Parfum, is a perfect representation of Positano’s summer spirit, blending the warm, mineral scent of sun-heated terracotta tiles with refreshing bergamot and blackcurrant buds. Each fragrance tells a unique story, evoking moments and memories tied to specific places and sensations. From the delicate sweetness of jasmine flowers in Fior Fiore Eau de Parfum to the mysterious allure of frankincense at dusk, Eau d’Italie captures the most intimate and evocative notes of Southern Italy.

Acqua di Positano Eau de Parfum, the newest Eau de Parfum from Eau d’Italie, is a dream brought to life in a bottle. It transports the wearer to the sun-drenched shores of the Amalfi Coast, where the sparkling Mediterranean waters meet the earthy, sun-soaked cliffs. This scent is a tribute to Positano itself, with notes of Citron, Petitgrain, Grains of Salt, Orange Flower Absolute, Hedione, and Driftwood that make Acqua di Positano a timeless companion for the modern-day adventurer, inviting them to bask in the effortless elegance of Italy’s most picturesque coast.

In an exclusive interview with the founders of Eau d’Italie, Marina Sersale and Sebastián Alvarez Murena, we uncover the heart and soul behind this extraordinary brand.

Eau d’Italie is deeply tied to Italian heritage. Can you share the story of how the brand was conceived and the specific moment or inspiration behind its creation?  

Eau d'Italie was born to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hotel Le Sirenuse, in 2001. Originally a big party had been organized for October 2001, with people coming from all over the world. Then 9/11 happened, and the world changed: it was no longer a time for celebrations, so the party was canceled. One day in the winter of 2002, during the off season, the younger generation of the family was on the terrace of the Hotel, and the topic of the celebrations came back on the table: the 50 years of Le Sirenuse was something important, what could we do to celebrate? The idea of a fragrance came up – and mind you, at that time there were very few independent fragrance brands, and none done by a hotel – so we took it up… and 23 years later, here we are, with Eau d’Italie as now an Italian contemporary classic.

Each fragrance tells a story. How do you approach translating a place, memory, or emotion into a scent?

It depends; over the years we have developed various ways of doing it. Sometimes It’s about translating an abstract concept into fragrance, whereas other times it’s exactly the opposite: bringing into fragrance something that is already an already existing fragrant note. To give an example of each case, in the case of our signature Eau d’Italie Eau de Parfum, the idea was to create a fragrance that would encapsulate the sensations of Positano in summer, so we decided to work around an abstract concept, the idea of a note of terracotta heated by the sun, the terracotta of the hand-made tiles on the terrace of the hotel, and of the many vases and amphorae on it. 

We focused on the slightly mineral scent they release when heated by the sun and thus was born the central note of Eau d’Italie Eau de Parfum, a warm mineral note around which we “embroidered” other classic notes from Southern Italy: bergamot and blackcurrant buds as top notes for freshness, a whiff of frankincense like the one coming from the Church in the evening. At the other end of the spectrum is Fior Fiore Eau de Parfum, on which the idea was to translate into the fragrance the voluptuous perfume of the hotel Sambac jasmines, which absorb the heat of the day and release it in the evening when it’s cooler.

Italy is renowned for its artisanal excellence. How do you incorporate traditional Italian craftsmanship into the creation of your perfumes?  

Italy is a country where traditionally when one wants something, the first instinct is to get it done by an artisan. You need shelves, you call a carpenter. You want a table, you find some old tiles and have them mounted by an iron monger. You want a specific kind of shirt, you go to a shirt maker, and the same applies to basically all fields, clothes, shoes, decorations, you name it. The creation of perfumes the way we do it is exactly the same: we decide we want to do a certain fragrance. We go around finding the talents who will execute it, the right perfumer, the right paper supplier for the box, the right person for making the caps, and so on. It’s the way things have traditionally been done in Italy basically since…ever!

Over the years, how has Eau d’Italie evolved in terms of its philosophy, audience, or creative direction?  

Eau d’Italie as a brand is a direct reflection of the personalities of its two founders, i.e. my wife and partner Marina Sersale and myself. It’s the way we interpret the beauty, glamour and chic of Italy and Le Sirenuse, and as such I think it directly reflects the way we have evolved along the years. When Eau d’Italie was born, more than twenty years ago, its packaging was very much avant-garde. Fast forward to our days, Eau d’Italie’s look is of a discrete chic, keeping in line with the personality of Le Sirenuse.

What challenges have you faced in maintaining authenticity and exclusivity in the niche perfume industry, especially in a market increasingly saturated with new brands?  

I guess our take is that if you believe in what you do and give it your best shot, there will always be out there someone who “gets it”. At the same time, we think it’s important to always keep an open mind for what goes on in the world. We are fascinated by how much we learn every day and we try to always be ready to embrace new ways of doing what we love most: fragrance.

With growing awareness of sustainability in luxury industries, how does Eau d’Italie balance environmental responsibility with creating high-quality, luxurious fragrances?

It’s a communal, integrated effort of the whole fragrance and beauty industry, starting with the fantastic job our suppliers do and adding our little something every time we can.

Which fragrance from your collection do you consider the most iconic or representative of your brand, and why?  

I would say Eau d’Italie Eau de Parfum because it resembles nothing that already existed nor exists now more than twenty years later, yet it stays enormously popular. It’s proof a number of people do follow their instincts on what they like.

Italy is a land of immense beauty and culture. How do specific Italian locations or traditions influence your creative process?  

It’s like being imbibed in beauty, daily, in everything you see and do.

Have you considered collaborations with other creatives, such as artists, designers, or chefs, to further expand Eau d’Italie’s storytelling?  

Not really, it’s not the way we work. In our work, the artists are the perfumers.

Looking ahead, what new directions or projects can we expect from Eau d’Italie? Are there untapped aspects of Italian culture you’d like to explore? 

We always have new things slowly cooking, some see the light, others don’t, and others again do but years later. I would say the problem is more trying to limit the amount of new things we want to do!

Le Sirenuse, Beautiful Resortwear

We all want to wear something floaty and twirl-worthy in midsummer. To go in for some nonchalant allure, beach-to-cocktail extravagance, and cocktail-to-party glam.  

And some classy Capris.

Emporio Sirenuse features milk handloom linen blouses, oversized all-occasion sundresses, bandeau tops, Majolica blue silk crepe shirts, cinched waists, and layered ruffled skirts offering high-volume floatiness.

We can all be “Positanesi” and be elegant clothes-horses for the famous south Italian vertical town. 

Positano is one of the chicest and most glamorous places in the world. An eighteenth-century palazzo, Le Sirenuse in Capri is one of the most famous hotels in the world.  But it is not just a $1,400-a-night hotel. It is also a one-stop luxury shop with its own haute couture fashion brand and perfume collections. An emporium of the fabled Dolce Vita.

Its fashion range comprises sweetheart necklines, figure-hugging bodices, gathered mini-skirts, cropped bralettes, keyhole halters, removable halter straps, viscose georgette linings, 1590 euros off-the-shoulder silk crepe glam, round neck Mandarin collars, roundboat necks, lucent satin, cream carryover tunics, intricate embroidery from Agra and Chios to Karabuk, Batik, Girandola, Arizona and Sacred Bull prints, colors from poppy to ivory, dropped waists, bare backs, beaded waistbands, 100% cotton, 100% voile and everything “superlatively feminine”.

Just one of the head-turning stars of the collection is the Augusta dress in Orchidea silk inspired by the painting of Georgina O’Keefe.

And, of course, the iconic wide-leg hi-rise caftans.

Founded in 1993, the Milan-based Emporio Sirenuse resortwear and lifestyle brand translates the rich artistic culture and coveted lifestyle of the Terra Felix.

Carla Sersale and Viola Parrocchetti run the business combining “the vibrancy of Eastern inspirations with the elegance of the Italian Riviera.”

Says Viola: “When I design, I have in mind a sophisticated and worldly woman who appreciates beauty in every country and landscape. 

Adds Carla: “Our collections represent, in clothing and style, what Le Sirenuse represents to the world. Viola takes the Italian summer as a mindset, and adds layers of inspiration from around the world.”

The menswear range includes Espiga espadrilles, Polos, Hawaiian shirts, and swim trunks after Allegra hicks. As well as a white bathrobe!

And then there is the chicest of chic perfume to consider.

“We created our first fragrance, Eau d'Italie, to celebrate Hotel Le Sirenuse’s 50th anniversary in 2001,” says Rome-born Marina Sersale, whose family opened their house as a hotel in 1951.

“We drew inspiration from my childhood memories of the happy times she spent there as a summer home. First among these was the recollection of racing my sister Giulia and brother Antonio barefoot across the hotel’s terracotta-tiled terraces. A particular olfactory memory – warm terracotta tiles heated by the sun – has stayed with me and is the central note around which we structured this fragrance which is still the hotel’s signature scent.”

With Argentinian partner journalist Sebastián Alvarez Murena, photographer Marina created Eau d'Italie – the essence of Italy. As well as body care, home fragrance, tableware, and glassware ranges, the $200 perfumes have become more exclusive.

Continues Marina: “Marvelling at the glamorous and beautiful women who danced on the terrace with suave men in tailored dinner jackets, wild herbs, and lemon flowers, the salty sea breeze, incense from the churches after the evening Mass, these recollections have informed our scents.”

"Working with French perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, the fragrances are a Grand Tour of Italy”. The collection includes Mystic Sunset, Graine de Joie, Jardin di Poete, and Un Bateau Pour Capri.

In 1938, film star Greta Garbo vanished. She was discovered with her new lover in Ravello on the Amalfi Coast, surrounded by roses. “To this tale of love, we dedicated Rosa Greta. Fior Fiore evokes the jasmine around the hotel’s Aldo’s Bar. Au Lac is a delicate floral inspired by the secret love affair between Italian Princess Vittoria Colonna and the artist Umberto Boccioni, one of the founders of the Italian Futurist movement.

“Inspired by our walks along The Path of the Gods – the beautiful mountain trail that goes all along the Amalfi’s Divine Coast, Acqua Decima is an ode to the sun and to the joy of life.”

Adds Sebastian: “The brand, with its twin mermaid logo, has become the ambassador of a certain cosmopolitan Italian style, at home in Positano.”

The Sersale family originally came from Naples. Cardinal Antonino Sersale was the city’s archbishop for more than twenty years and was nearly elected pope in 1769. 

Siblings Anna, Aldo, Paolo, and Franco Sersale moved to the Villa Giulietta in Positano to escape the summer heat of Naples. In 1944, Paolo was mayor between 1944-1960. The hotel was an army rest resort. John Steinbeck was a hotel guest.

“We went to the Sirenuse, an old family house converted into a first-class hotel, spotless and cool, with grape arbors over its outside dining room. Every room has its little balcony and looks out over the blue sea to the islands of the Sirens from which those ladies sang so sweetly”.

The hotel is decorated with mementos from the travels of the late Franco Sersale who designed the hotel’s pool terrace and panoramic, bougainvillea-clad La Sponda restaurant. His son Antonio and daughter-in-law Carla have brought a contemporary feel with British curator Silka Rittson-Thomas with major installations by Martin Creed, Stanley Whitney, and Caragg Thuring. Guilia is responsible for the hotel’s plants and flowers. Le Sirenuse is a long-time member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

What is a gourmand fragrance? Explaining the tempting scent trend.

These fragrances are irresistible, even if you don’t have a sweet tooth.

VANILLA, CHOCOLATE OR strawberry? Take your pick, because gourmand perfumes are the latest fragrance trend truly indulging our senses. 

It was the caramelized sugar and spiced saffron notes of Maison Francis Kurkdijan Baccarat Rouge that began to change our taste in fragrances in 2021. Then in 2024, Sabrina Carpenter’s cherry connotation had us head over heels for a cheeky, sultry scent. Even millennials and minimalists were tempted by the sweeter You Rêve eau de parfum edition of Glossier’s much loved musk. This year continues to serve up gourmand scents, edible accords and sweet notes as the most irresistible fragrance trend. 

Below, BAZAAR breaks down everything you need to know about gourmand perfumes with guidance from scent expert and MECCA Fragrance Education Lead, Steven Ross Glyde.

What is a gourmand fragrance?

“Gourmand refers to fragrances or fragrance notes that smell edible, good enough to eat,” says Steven Ross Glyde, MECCA’s Fragrance Education Lead. Think of notes like sweet vanilla, caramel, coffee and honey accords, plus fresh fruits like watermelon, grapefruit and peach. Glyde notes that vanilla and pistachio are proving popular in perfume, and tomato summer is still going strong for candles and home fragrance.

Is vanilla a gourmand scent?

Yes, vanilla is a gourmand. “Vanilla is a lot more nuanced and complex than most people realise,” explains Glyde. “There is that classic, sweet vanillin scent and this is a synthetic vanilla that smells a lot like what we use in baking,” explains the expert. But, “if we look at a real vanilla absolute, this will actually have rich, leathery facets with chocolatey accents. Vanilla absolute is warm and enveloping, often described as having a rum-like quality,” Glyde continues. For three unique interpretations of the note, Glyde describes Ellis Brooklyn Vanilla Milk eau de parfum as “decadent”, Eau d’Italie Morn to Dusk eau de parfum as “effortless” and Diptyque Eau Duelle eau de parfum as “sophisticated” — something for everyone.

In the right hands, this makes vanilla fragrances far more complex than expected. “The art of perfumery allows an artist to highlight unique facets of the vanilla when bringing their creations to life. Modern perfumery is always finding unique ways to use various expressions of vanilla to create these incredible tapestries of scent that celebrate the comfort and decadence of vanilla,” says Glyde.

What perfumes have a hint of vanilla? 

“Vanilla fragrances always hold a special place in the hearts of our customers,” says Glyde, citing Maison Francis Kurkdjian Gentle Fluidity Gold Eau de Parfum and Maison Crivelli Hibiscus Mahajád Extrait de Parfum as favourites at MECCA. Eau D'Italie @eauditalie_official has a new fragrance, Acqua Di Positano. Sunwarmed, salty and citrus, it's a beauty. 

Heavy on the orange blossom but soft orange blossom, blooming off a salty ocean breeze with petitgrain adding more citrus and driftwood bringing light woods. It's bright and sunny and easy to wear. The driftwood gets a little musky at the drydown conveying that warm skin in the sun feel with the citrus and orange blossom staying in the scent too.

Eau d'Italie and ALTAIA are also now available in travel sizes. I love when a brand does this. Easier to take with you yes, but also more affordable. The 10 ml of Acqua Di Positano is $55. Travel sizes are also available in the Signature Scent, and Altaia's Don't Cry For Me and By Any Other Name are $68.

With the summer in full swing, the fragrance industry is offering up some rejuvenating spritzers, whether it’s sultry evening scents or refreshing citruses during the day. Gourmands are still going strong (Future Market Insights predicts the category will have global value of $55 billion by 2033), as are more herbaceous and lightweight creations like fougères (pink pepper, lavender, cardamom, and petitgrain making regular appearances) to counter the sweetness of the former category.
